Built in 1931, Disston Recreation Center has served generations of families in Philadelphia’s Tacony neighborhood. Torrado Construction served as General Contractor for a comprehensive renovation designed to modernize this longstanding community resource while respecting the character and craftsmanship of the original building.
The work included significant interior and exterior improvements. Interior renovations encompassed much of the recreation center outside of the gymnasium, including new flooring, ceilings, restrooms, and improvements to the large second-floor multipurpose space. Exterior work included façade repointing and new stainless-steel windows and doors with protective glazing.
Working within a building with nearly a century of history required a thoughtful balance between preservation and performance—maintaining its neighborhood character while providing the durability, safety, and functionality expected of a modern public recreation facility.
Disston Recreation Center has been part of the Tacony community since 1931. Its renovation helps preserve an important neighborhood landmark while creating safer, more functional spaces for recreation, programming, and community activities for generations to come.
